Soccer players head for Spain


A team of 16 junior soccer players will represent the nation at the inaugural Volkswagen Junior World football Masters Tournament, to be held in Madrid, Spain from May 5 to 10.

The players were selected at a tournament held at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday involving eight under 13 boys’ teams from Bulawayo, Mbare, Chitungwiza, Masvingo, Mabvuku Tafara, Warren Park, Masvingo, Kariba and High Glen.

Mabvuku Tafara were the eventual winners beating Chitungwiza 2-0 in the final.

“We are coming from South Africa where we had our first tournament on African soil.

“But, judging from what I have seen in Harare, the country has potential,” Peter Malherbe, the representative of German based firm Volkswagen Sponsoring and Event Marketing, who are hosting the event.

Zifa chairman Wellington Nyatanga who was present at the tournament hailed the event as a major step in football development in the country.
