Sulumani heads for the top

Sulumani Chimbetu is in line for two National Arts Merit Awards (Nama).

The Sungura giant has been nominated for the outstanding musician award and his album Reverse Deal has also been nominated for the Outstanding Album Award.

Elvas Mari the National Arts Council Director said this year’s awards will be presented in “a memorable, unique ceremony”.

Once again artists will be on the spotlight with the outstanding ones featuring in more than one category.

This is the ninth edition of the awards.

In the theatre category the likes of Joyce Mpofu and Tafadzwa Muzondo will battle for the outstanding actor and actress.

Heal the Wounds is a nominee in the Outstanding Theatrical product.

“This year we are making a statement of resilience as the arts and culture sector and as a people,” said Mari.

“It is clear that Zimbabwe’s arts industry has come out in full force to support that Nama happens even if there is no money,” he said.

With the theme Together as One, the award ceremony this year’s award ceremony is meant to present the best of what has been produced by the arts industry from December 2008 to November 2009.

“We are negotiating for Miss Tourism Zimbabwe to be one of our award presenters and we also have two Big Brother participants who are yet to be confirmed as presenters,” he said.

Other presenters to look out for will include two actors from the popular Zambian soap Kabanana and their visit is courtesy of Savannah Pictures and also Zimbabwe Idols Jonah and Eric.

“Our aim this year is to provide a quality award ceremony and we organised that ZBC broadcast the event for the public,” said Mari.

“It is strictly by invite as it makes it easier to control people’s behaviour unlike when tickets are available for everyone. We want a quality award ceremony not a mere show,” he said.

The ninth edition of Nama will be held on the February 20 at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale Harare in a private ceremony.

Attendance will only be after contacting National Arts Council for invitations.
