Funding for new dam dwindles

The piping of water from Mtshabezi dam to Bulawayo is facing a deficit of $18 million after the government allocated only $47 million for the project, which once complete could end the perennial water problems in the arid city of Bulawayo.

Bulawayo is on the brink of running dry as it does not have any alternative water sources.

The city requires at least 120 000 cubic metres of water each day, and its hopes lie in the Matabeland Zambezi Water project, which will pump water from the Zambezi River .
