Guard in court for MDC break-in

Thieves broke into the Movement for Democratic Change-Mutambara (MDC-M) offices in Hillside, Harare and stole a computer, printer, a cordless phone and various documents.

A security guard, Emmanuel Mugwidi appeared in court on Friday in connection with the burglary. He was denied bail at Harare Magistrates Courts on the grounds that the stolen computer could have carried classified and confidential information about the party.

The guard was arrested after police officers from Rhodesville and Harare Central police station attended the crime scene and took fingerprints.

The guard claims he was in the guardroom when he heard the noise of a window being broken.

He told police that the thieves quickly ambushed him and ordered him to lock himself up.

The guard says his fingerprints were later found on the window because he was asked to close it by one of the police officers.

During the course of last week, at least ten Central Intelligence Officers (CIO) operatives visited the MDC-M offices to do their own investigations.

The MDC-M has not made any official comment on the matter.
