Ritual murderer to hang
A sombre atmosphere enveloped the High Court onTuesday afternoon as Justice Tendai Uchena sentenced a Karoi man, Bigknows Wairos, to death for killing his son in a suspected ritual murder.
Justice Uchena, who was sitting with two assessors, ruled he had found no extenuating circumstances to save Wairos from the hangman’s noose considering the manner in which he murdered his son.
Musekiwa Mbanje represented the state and Wairos was convicted of murder with actual intent.
The court found that Wairos lured his son Ronald (then aged 9) into believing he wanted to take him to the Registrar General’s Office in Karoi to get him a birth certificate.
He instead took him to Sandara Farm where he killed him before cutting off one of his ears and draining the blood into a lunch box.
The incident occurred on June 12, 2007 when Wairos duped his mother Eneresi Siamkonde who was staying with his two sons Ronald and Tawanda (7) at Chivakanenyama village that he was taking them to Karoi purportedly to obtain birth certificates for them.
Wairos then boarded a motor vehicle which was being driven by one of his three accomplices who wanted a boy’s body parts and blood for ritual purposes.
After travelling for a long distance, the vehicle was driven into a bushy area at Sandara Farm where it was parked and Tawanda was ordered to disembark as Ronald was held by one of the three men who were all dressed in black.
Wairos was given an iron bar by one of the men in the car and he used it to strike Ronald twice on the head, killing him instantly.
Wairos took scissors and cut off one ear from his dead son’s head and drained oozing blood into a lunch box.
His accomplices dragged the body into a bush and, before leaving the place, Wairos crushed his dead son’s head with a rock.
The matter was reported by Wairos’s son, Tawanda, who escaped and wandered into the farm upon realising that his brother had been killed.
Tawanda reported what had happened to one Munyaradzi Kondo who found him wandering on the farm and the matter was reported to the police leading to Wairos’s arrest.
