ZIMBABWE Cricket (ZC) yesterday named a 15-member national Under-19 squad to compete in the Under-19 Quadrangular Series in India, beginning September 23.

The team, which is coached by former Zimbabwe coach Walter Chawaguta, will play six matches against India, South Africa and Australia in the Quadrangular Series which runs until October 5, in preparation for next February’s ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Dubai.
The Zimbabwe squad, which comprises emerging talent, will be captained by Malcolm Lake, a promising left-handed batsman who scored a magnificent century against eventual champions India at the previous edition of the U-19 World Cup in Australia.
Lake is one of the six survivors from last year’s World Cup squad together with Kieran Geyle, Luke Jongwe, Cuthbert Musoko and Ryan Burl.
ZC national development manager Nick Singo told NewsDay Sport that the squad of 15 players was selected after the conclusion of national trials at St Georges College last week.
“The squad was selected after the trials which were held at St Georges College last week. The selectors picked an enlarged squad of 30 players for the World Cup and 15 players for the India tour. This means the players who might not have made it for the India tour can still make it into the final World Cup Squad which will be announced in December,” Singo said.
The team is expected to step up their preparations for the upcoming tour with a nationwide tour in which they will play against local franchises.

The Under-19 team is expected to take on Southern Rocks in Masvingo next Friday, before taking on Matabeleland Tuskers in Bulawayo two days later before concluding the national tour with two matches against Mid West Rhinos in Kwekwe.
They will then return to Harare to play the recently revived Zimbabwe Cricket Academy side before going into camp from September 3-8 prior to their departure for India.
