POLICE yesterday said they were on high alert and had intensified physical search for dangerous weapons on all vehicles entering the capital amid fears that the MDC-T was planning Egypt-style mass demonstrations following its crushing defeat in last week’s elections.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the development.
“Police are ready to deal with lawbreakers, we have issued a statement,” Charamba said without elaborating.
The police fears could have been fuelled by statements published by some online publications where exiled MDC-T treasurer-general Roy Bennet is quoted as saying: “. . . don’t pay any bills, don’t attend work, just bring the country to a standstill. There should be resistance against this theft and the people of Zimbabwe need to speak out strongly.”
However, MDC-T spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora yesterday denied reports that his party was mulling mass protests.
“We are going to pursue lawful measures to challenge this fraud. These shall include legal, political and diplomatic channells,” he said.
Zanu PF trounced MDC-T in the presidential election by 61% for President Robert Mugabe against Morgan Tsvangirai’s 34% of the votes cast.
