The team, led by captain and reigning Africa Junior Elite champion Laurelle Brown, trooped into camp in the capital on Sunday in preparation for the trip to the North African nation and will leave tomorrow.

National team coach Wayne Davidson is expecting good results from the games. “We have a record number of athletes travelling to the Africa Champs in Morocco with 12 athletes who I can report have all shown an incredible dedication this past holiday and are well on track to produce good performances,” Davidson said.

Medals are expected to come from Brown (18), who should be able to defend her title in the Women Junior Elite category, despite strong competition expected from South Africa and the host nation.

The reigning Sportswoman of the Year can depend on support from emerging starlet Skye Davidson who will be making her first appearance at the Junior Elite distance, but has a very impressive unbeaten record at these Championships, albeit in the lower ranks.

In the U/15 divisions, the country has the most impressive recent record on the continent and returns to the party with another strong team of potential winners — Gideon Benade and Gabby de Chassart, who hold the country’s hopes of retaining the titles won last year in Mauritius.

Drew Williams and Philip Marcus who would be making their debut at the championships, will compete in the Junior Elite men’s division.

The travelling squad: Women Junior Elite: Laurelle Brown, Skye Davidson, Karishma Patel, Serena Rendell, Rebecca Duncan and Helen Mitchell. Men Junior Elite: Marcus Philip and Drew Williams. Under 15 Boys: Gideon Benade and Mitchell Kaye. Under 15 Girls: Cami Davidson and Gabby de Chassart.
