PROMINENT human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa’s application challenging her placement on remand was not heard at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts

PROMINENT human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa’s application challenging her placement on remand was not heard at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts yesterday because the State was not available to argue the matter.

Report by Wonai Masvingise

The case was remanded to next Monday.

Mtetwa was arrested last month and detained for a week on charges of obstructing the course of justice before her release on $500 bail last week.

Her lawyer Harrison Nkomo confirmed the development to NewsDay.

He said: “The facts as they are on the Form 242 (request for remand form) do not disclose an offence. The State was not available and was not ready to argue the matter. We shall argue the same on the 8th (of April).”

Mtetwa was arrested after she clashed with police while representing four staffers from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s office who had been arrested for allegedly impersonating law enforcement agents.

Meanwhile, the remand hearing for the Premier’s staffers — Warship Dumba, Thabani Mpofu, Felix Matsinde and Mehluli Tshuma — has been deferred to today for allocation of a trial date.

The lawyer for the four, Aleck Muchadehama, confirmed the development yesterday.
