A 27-YEAR-OLD Masvingo man has been arrested for allegedly fatally striking his 52-year-old father with a brick and pounding him with a pestle in a row over a bicycle.

Jonasi Tafirenyika from Muzarira village, Chief Chikwanda in Masvingo, killed his father Benjamin Tafirenyika over the weekend after the latter questioned him why he took his bicycle without consent and got it stolen.
Masvingo Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said Jonasi asked for a bicycle from his father so that he could cycle to Mazarire business centre where he would get transport to Masvingo town.
Inspector Zhanero said Benjamin protested, but his defiant son stole the bicycle from his father’s bedroom and cycled off.
“Jonasi went to Mazarire business centre and left the bicycle hidden in a bush. Upon his return from Masvingo town, the bicycle was nowhere to be seen. He then proceeded home, but upon arrival at around 7pm, his mother Patricia Tavagwisa asked where he had left his father’s bicycle,” Zhanero said.
“The now deceased was angered that his son did not listen to him and that the bicycle had eventually been stolen. He had a misunderstanding with his son and he punched his son who retaliated.
Patricia tried to restrain the two as a fight ensued, but failed and went to neighbours to seek help. During her absence, Jonasi hit his father with a brick on the head and pounded him with a pestle as he lay on the ground. Benjamin died on the spot.”

He said the deceased was taken to Morgenster Mission Hospital for a post mortem. The accused is in police custody and awaiting appearance in court on a murder charge.
