POLICE in Harare yesterday arrested ten MDC activists who were on a door-to-door campaign in Glen Norah, a party official said last night.

Report by Everson Mushava

Party deputy spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi said the ten were accused of engaging in the campaign without police clearance. By the time of going to print last night, Chihwayi said, the ten were still being held at Glen Norah Police Station, but frantic efforts to get them released were underway.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said she was not aware of the developments as she was not in Harare. She referred questions to superintendent Andrew Phiri, who was not reachable on his telephone.

Chihwayi said: “The MDC once again views this as a clearly orchestrated plan by some police details to frustrate the efforts of creating a just and fair Zimbabwe.

“We once again wish to make known publicly that MDC will not be intimidated by these acts of desperation. The pursuit of a just and fair Zimbabwe is in full swing and has undoubtedly become the road sign to a democratic Zimbabwe.”

This is not the first time that MDC activists have found themselves in trouble while on a door-to-door mobilisation campaign. Two weeks ago another group of activists was attacked by suspected Zanu PF supporters in Zengeza West in Chitungwiza.

Chihwayi added last night: “When the MDC made a resolution to mobilise in every valley, village and suburb of this country, we were aware of such elements. We know very well that the determination of the people will bring down the walls of this dictatorship.”
